Imagine for a minute that you are stranded on a deserted tropical island. Classic beginning of a joke or brain teaser, right? It’s also the classic example of where one would NOT want to be. But consider the following: What if, on this deserted island, you could control the temperature to whatever you wanted? And what if there were multiple streams of clean water for drinking and washing? What if there was plenty of tropical fruit (to be expected on a tropical island, right?), AND there was also plenty of fish and game? Now, you might have to go fishing or hunting to get the food, but your forays were always guaranteed to be successful so that you would always have at least something to eat. Now for the best part: What if you were allowed to have just a few people on that island with you, and it could be anyone you wanted in the whole world—and that means the person or persons you most cared about? You see my point? It’s not so bad after all. Now, I know this scenario is not the case for everyone. I know it’s still not the ideal scenario. I know some of us are experiencing real loss during this time. But don’t most of us still have the things that are most important to us? Maybe there’s a message in that for us. And consider this to boot: Maybe our island is deserted, but we’re not totally isolated. We can still be in touch, even if we can’t actually touch. How much more will we appreciate those touches when this thing is over? I know I will.
